What's new in Music Class??
Below will be short notes for each month of the school year, so you can see what you child's class has been up to in music class. This updated information is just for Mrs. Cummings' music classes; Mrs. Cavazos might have something different going on in her music classes at Riverwood.
End-of-Winter News
This January and February, 1st and 4th grades will be learning music for their musicals.
First grade is doing a show by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse called Creepy Creatures. I'm excited to see this come together.
Fourth grade is going to be featuring each class on recorder and singing one song. We are using selections from the movie "Sing" for our songs, and really interesting arrangements for recorder by Paul Corbiere. Hopefully we will have each class playing their own instrumental accompaniment with the recorder song. Exciting stuff!
5th grade is continuing to learn ukulele, also a few recorder songs, to continue knowledge of note names and rhythm reading, as well as the concept of I, IV, V7 chord progressions.
3rd grade has been working on new note low La, as well as a few folk dances (which I call "movement" to distract from the fact that they're dancing - folk dances aren't "cool.") Moving to music is healthy for the body and mind, as it teaches students to listen for same/different sections in the music but also on these cold days when inside recess is all day, a few days in a row, the movement breaks are especially needed!
2nd grade is working with the notes Do, Re, Mi, So, La and continuing on with simple quarter note, eighth note, and rest rhythms. We are beginning to listen to music to hear big sections (A, B, C) and adding to knowledge of instruments by classifying them into groups (wood/metal/drums).
Kindergarten has been getting really good at longer 8-16 measure songs with games. They can play for a while before having to move on to something else. We have left the farm behind in our weekly music class, and are learning about the days of the week, months, coins, and seasons.
