Thoughts, details about what we're doing, general music stuff.
So much is happening at school, even with shortened weeks in October! The 5th graders had their BOOM! musical last week, and they were AMAZING! One thing I never really thought about was how much cooperation they would learn by having to play together as a class. It really made them focus, listen and become better musicians.
The second graders are the next show coming up, on Nov. 17, and I can't wait! I have always loved cooking and food, and this theme has been an idea of mine for a couple of years now. I love the music I've chosen to have them share, and think the show will be deliciously cute! We are all going to be learning a song for the upcoming Veterans Day assembly on Nov. 10th. This is not a concert, but we do include music as one way to honor our veterans. Each grade level will have one song in the assembly that they will attend. My favorite is probably 5th grade, as they do the Armed Forces Medley, although last year I recall getting choked up listening to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades sing our national anthem. One thing that surprised me this year was Kindergarten. I haven't taught K for 10 years, and had been thinking about this all summer with trepidation. Imagine my surprise in learning how much fun they can be! 20 minutes a week is not much time to get learning in, and we keep things moving! I wish it were 10 minutes longer so I could just get in more. I find myself smiling almost the whole time. Songs I've been (over)playing at home: Hamilton Soundtrack - "My Shot" is just SOOO catchy! Songs I've been playing at school: "Can't Stop the Feeling," anything educational by They Might Be Giants, and the group Trout Fishing in America. They're fun!
